THIS CAN’T BE! It’s a White Ibis!!

This is so special!

You are sharing in an event that has never happened as far as any long-time birder here knows. A White Ibis (Eudocimus albus) at one of the lakes near Fountain Creek Nature Center about 20 minutes from home. What’s so special about this Ibis? They are very common after all. Well they are common, but ONLY if you live along the Southeastern coast of the US. Colorado is a far cry from there and never has a White Ibis been sighted anywhere in Colorado, ever! This is their territory:

Yes, people are flocking (no pun intended 😉 ) to see the bird. Yes, he is on the other side of the lake, but the pictures are good enough proof for this rare event.

Aside from their black-tipped wings and their reddish pink legs and bills, they are totally white. The bare skin around their eyes is also reddish pink. They fly with their necks and legs straight, a sight to see.

White Ibis are very social birds, usually in large flocks, but this fella is way off course and apparently on his own.

This is the habitat they prefer. All types of wetlands including shallow ponds. They forage in less than 8 inches of water and in short vegetation looking for insects and crustaceans as well as frogs, lizards, snails and newts. Good thing, we don’t tend to have their best loved habitat of muddy-bottom wetlands.

We did spend a lot of time visiting with our special guest this morning. Truly a once in a lifetime happening! Then again, there are so many weather events that are not usual throughout the country, he may be a scout looking for a new home. Regardless, what a special morning!

Until next time my friend!

I moved to CO several years ago from Florida where I was born and raised. Seeing White Ibis ALL THE TIME (and being part of the Audubon Society there as an avid birder) I knew what I saw a few weeks ago and that it WAS a White Ibis as it flew right over my truck. I came across your post when searching for info on the presence of such an awesome bird being possible here in CO. Since such time I have found others who have reported it as well. I am so happy to learn that other people have gotten the rare opportunity to see one of my favorite birds!

I came across your post because I was looking to see if this bird was found in Colorado. I’m still learning about wildlife in the area. I took a photo of one at Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Commerce City the other day. How strange.

It might be the same one or a type of egret? The White Ibis are totally not anywhere away from the southern coasts so it is strange, you are so right! I kept thinking he/she might be a “scout” to find new territory as farther north continues to warm. They are beautiful!
